Effective Presentation

Presentations for most of us are nerve wrecking.  Being asked to stand up in front of your peers and talk about a chosen topic is enough to stress any student but there are a number of things you can do to help with the nervous and make your presentation as successful as possible.

Choose a Topic Your Familiar With

If you’re giving a choice on a topic choose something that you already have a reasonable amount of knowledge about and that your audience can relate to.  This will give you a foundation on where to start your presentation and also prevent your audience from getting bored

Writing Up Your Presentation

After you choose your topic choose subheadings to break your presentation into sections.  This will help organise your speech and make the presentation flow more easily.  Your presentation should have an:
1.      Introduction – here is where you introduce your topic and tell your audience what you’re going to discuss in the presentation

2.      Main body – here is where you discuss your different headings.  Ensure that your headings are in order and your presentation will be easier for you and your audience

3.      Summary – here is where you recap and highlight your presentation briefly.

Key Steps to an Effective Presentation

Practice

I can’t emphasise the importance of practicing this will allow you to know your presentation inside out and allow you to tweak any mistakes

Starting your presentation

Before you introduce your topic ensure that you welcome your audience and introduce yourself to them.  Then go on to discuss your topic.

Ending your Presentation

At the end of your presentation thank your audience for their attention and don't forget to ask for questions.
